At Cascade Canyon, we have a two-year elementary science
curriculum cycle that focuses primarily on teaching the scientific
method/process through investigations and experimentation, with specific
attention given to life and earth sciences. Physical science concepts and
themes are also woven into the two years of study to help students further
understand, appreciate, and evaluate the scientific and natural world around
them. In this way, we will cover
the four strands of the California State Science Content Standards (physical
science, life science, earth science, and investigation/experimentation). Where possible, science is taught in its historical and environmental contexts, integrating themes from the California History/Social Science Standards and aligning with California's Environmental Principles and Concepts. At every level, the scientific method will be used as a means for asking meaningful questions and conducting careful investigations. As the students progress from first to fourth grade, predictions will become based more on observed patterns and interpretation of observations rather than on random guessing. By the end of fourth grade, students will be able to develop their own questions and perform investigations as a means of truly embracing the concepts explored in the other three strands. In addition, students will make connections between the role science plays in our history and in understanding and protecting the Earth's fragile ecosystems. In 2010-2011, we will be in year "A"; in 2011-2012, we will be in year "B."
