Music is a gift that allows us to experience the beauty and joy present in the world around us. Music is healing, enlivening and enriching, it helps us to learn to communicate and build community. Music teaches us harmony. The music program at Cascade Canyon School is based on the philosophy that we are all musical and that every child loves to sing, dance and play. It is the goal of the music program at Cascade Canyon School to provide a holistic approach to learning and appreciating music. Every class starts in a circle where we gather first as a community to share songs, express ourselves and dance. From there we move into a number of musical activities that may include singing songs, movement, body percussion, ensemble work, vocal jams, songwriting, notation, call and response, listening and learning about various music styles. Components of the CCS Music Curriculum: 1) Listening – Students become better able to appreciate the elements of a musical performance, whether it be vocal or instrumental, and in different genres of music. Listening is the foundation for good musicianship and of music appreciation. 2) Singing – Students learn to open their voices through a selection of opening exercises, free-form vocal improvisation, communication, and songs. They become familiar with the varieties of vocal music, monophonic, harmonic, polyphonic, call and response. 3) Rhythm – Music is the pulse of life. Everything has rhythm. Everything in nature, in our bodies, in the universe has rhythm. Music is math. We will learn through body percussion and various instrumental exercises how to “feel the pulse” and count music. 4) Instrumental Music – Students learn to play melodic instruments and learn to understand the components of musical concepts such as melody, harmony, rhythm, notation, composition and songwriting. 5) Movement and Dance – Students learn to move their bodies in time with the music, and learn to isolate certain rhythms within their bodies. We dance as a community and learn to find comfort in body movement. 6) Creativity and Integration – It is a focus of the music program to provide an atmosphere where the students can learn about themselves through creativity and self-expression, we will be doing this through songwriting exercises, creative expression and improvisation. It is also a focus that the music program reinforces other lessons the children are learning. Music builds community and our goal is to create a musical community that helps us grow as people. ![]() _______________________________________ Music Curriculum Grade 1/2 Movement, Drama, Games Feeling the pulse, pattern recognition, simple body percussion, movement games, learning to follow cues, creative and interpretive movement, dramatizing songs and stories, dances.
