Cascade Canyon School – Small, Progressive School Thrives on Being Small Fairfax, CA – October 22, 2009 – Being small sometimes comes with insurmountable challenges. But for Cascade Canyon K – 8th School in Fairfax, being small, independent and progressive has driven enrollment since 1981. The rolling 17-acre tree, trail and creek-bordered campus belies the extraordinary academic and creative sophistication contained in the 55-plus student body. Among the few small, independent and progressive schools serving Marin, Cascade Canyon hosts multi-age classes of 6 – 15 students. Students thrive in active learning classrooms where each opinion, each voice, each personality counts. The Fall Open House Event is Nov. 14th, 10 am – 12 pm. Traditional schools have incorporated selected concepts and portions of progressive education within the confines of larger classes/larger schools. However, meeting the needs of the whole child in smaller classes and in smaller schools continues to optimize learning, both in terms of confidence and mastery. “Cascade Canyon’s progressive curriculum stimulates deep thinking and awareness of oneself as a learner, simultaneously developing each learner’s expressive, creative, intellectual and social-emotional growth. For students to maintain a love of learning and a sense of balance and of self, children require environments that value the student-teacher relationship and challenge, engage, inspire and connect the student to their community,” shares school Director, Rebecca Hausammann.
