Overview
Admission to Cascade Canyon School is available year-round as space permits, although priority is given to families who apply by February 5. Admission is based on an evaluation of your child's previous school history (if applicable), a family interview, and your child's participation in a typical school day. We also strongly encourage applicant families to attend at least one Parent Tour and Open House to learn more about Cascade Canyon School, meet our teachers and familiarize yourself with our school philosophy.

As our Kindergarten program tends to fill quickly, we strongly recommend that Kindergarten applications are received by February 5 so that your child can be considered in our first round of admissions decisions. Families seeking tuition assistance (see below) must also submit their school application at this time.

Students entering Kindergarten must be five years old by December 1.

Please request an Application by calling our Admissions office at 415-459-3464, or click on the link here: ccs_application_2010. A non-refundable $85 fee is also required for each student at the time of application.

Scholarship Program
Description of our Program
For the 2010/2011 school year, Cascade Canyon School is pleased to announce that we have again set aside a small amount of money for several partial scholarships for Cascade Canyon School families who are in need of tuition assistance, and for whom a partial scholarship would make the difference in the family’s ability to attend Cascade Canyon School.

Cascade Canyon School has contracted with a third party, the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS), to receive and analyze parents’ financial information and help guide the school’s Scholarship Committee in deciding how to allocate funds.

We hope that what we can provide through our Scholarship Program will help broaden the range of families who are able to attend Cascade Canyon School.

Eligibility
Current families and families new to Cascade Canyon School who are in need of tuition assistance are welcome to apply to be considered for partial scholarship for the 2010-2011 school year. Partial scholarships are available to students of any race, color, gender, creed, and national or ethnic origin.

How to Apply
We ask that parents complete a Parents’ Financial Statement (PFS) through School and Student Service for Financial Aid (SSS), a service of the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS), and submit supporting tax documents each year to the school to demonstrate family need. The SSS program provides an objective analysis of family financial information to guide the Scholarship Committee in determining how much a family can pay towards school costs.

Steps to Prepare the Parents’ Financial Statement  (PFS) through SSS online
Note: Deadline to submit your completed PFS and all supporting financial documents is FEBRUARY 19, 2010.
1. Have your family’s financial documents in hand.
2. Go to: http://sss.nais.org to access the online SSS program and prepare your financial report.
3. Enter the Cascade Canyon School Code 5043 so that your information will be sent to our school.
4. Make sure to submit the required tax forms and supporting documents to SSS to finalize your application. See contact information below.
5. If you need help during this process, contact SSS:
  • Customer Service Center for Parents: 800-344-8328 (Mon-Fri: 9 am - 8 pm. Sat: 9 am - 4 pm) or This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it .
  • SSS Website for Families: http://sss.nais.org
  • Mailing Address for Submitting Paper PFS and for Submitting Required Documents:
SSS By NAIS, P.O. Box 449, Randolph, MA  02368.
For overnight mail, use this address: SSS by NAIS, Application Processing Center, 437 Turnpike Street, Canton, MA 02021.

To avoid processing delays, families should use a PFS Cover Sheet when mailing documents to SSS. This will allow SSS to match the documents to the application.
Divorced, Separated or Non-married Parents:
All parents are asked to complete the PFS and submit tax returns to the Admissions Office. Each situation is unique, however, and exceptions will be handled on an individual basis.

The Scholarship Committee maintains strict confidentiality of all financial information provided to them by our families. In cases of two-household families, information about one parent is not shared with the other.

Application Timeline

DUE BY FEBRUARY 5, 2010 Your child's application for admission to Cascade Canyon School must be received by the school on or before this date in order to be eligible to apply for tuition assistance.

DUE BY FEBRUARY 19, 2010 Please submit your PFS (Parent Financial Statement)  to SSS online on or before this date, with an electronic copy of your 2008 and 2009 Federal Tax Form 1040 and any required supporting schedules and wage and tax statements (W-2s, 1090s, etc.). For students whose parents are separated or divorced, both parents should submit tax forms and complete the PFS.

MAILED IN MARCH 2010 The Scholarship Committee will meet in March to determine awards and notify both returning and newly admitted families in March of their Required Family Contribution (RFC) toward the school tuition. Requests for partial scholarships that are filed after the deadlines will only be considered as funds allow. Due to the small size of our school and the comparatively reasonably priced tuition of Cascade Canyon School among other private schools in our area, especially in relation to the cost of providing first rate education in a small school setting, we may have requests for more assistance than we have funds available, and we may not be able to meet full need as determined by SSS. We will, however, do what we can within our means to accommodate our families who are in need of assistance.

RENEWAL Partial scholarships toward tuition assistance will be granted for one year. We ask that parents complete a PFS each year and send it to SSS in accordance with the annual application deadlines.

How is the Required Family Contribution (RFC) calculated?
The RFC is determined through a methodology developed by SSS, which takes into consideration gross taxable and non-taxable income, assets, liabilities, family size and the number of students in tuition-charging schools or colleges. After allowances for basic necessities and taxes, and a cost of living adjustment for the Bay Area, a portion of the remaining funds are considered available for education on a sliding scale.

Income:
Refers to pre-tax income from wages, businesses, and investments. The SSS formula considers certain costs against this income in calculating the RFC, but they are not exactly the same factors that the IRS uses to calculate taxable income.

Assets:
If a family has major assets, savings, and/or investments, the formula used by SSS computes an income supplement. Student assets such as savings or trust accounts are also considered. The treatment of home equity is not matched to actual market value in the Bay Area, but calculates a value based on the price paid for the home and the years it has been owned. The income generated by assets also takes parent age into account with respect to consideration of retirement savings.

Cost of Living:
The high cost of living in the Bay Area is factored into the calculation of the RFC.

Unusual Expenses:
The formula used by SSS makes allowances for expenses such as care for an aging grandparent, parent educational loan payments and a number of other expenses listed in the PFS instructions.

FAQs
How early may I drop my child off at school?

School opens at 8:20 a.m.  There will be no supervision prior to that time. Also, please respect the teachers’ class preparation time in the morning and schedule appointment times during their afternoon hours if you wish to discuss anything with them.

What time does school start?

School starts at 8:30 a.m sharp.  K-4 students enter from the back entrance of the Lower Grades Campus, and 5-8 students enter through the main door of the Upper Grades Campus.

What time does the school day end?

3:00 p.m.  For liability reasons, and to ensure your child’s safety, children cannot be left at school unattended and must be picked-up or walk home (with prior written parental permission) by 3:10 p.m.  Teachers who provide child care services after the end of school are entitled to charge for their time ($35 per 1/2 hr.) in the event of a later pick-up.

Should I call if my child is sick, will be arriving at school late, or if we are planning to be on vacation during regularly scheduled class times?

Absolutely. You should call the Office at 415-459-3464, leaving a message on the machine (preferably by 8:00 a.m.) with your child’s name and the reason for the tardiness or absence if no one answers the phone.  If a student has not arrived by 9:00 a.m. and no call or message has been received, our Office Manager will call to say your child has not arrived at school and she/he will be marked with an unexcused absence.

When my child is sick, should I keep her/him home?

Yes, and please let the Office know. Kindly do not send contagious children to school.  If a child becomes sick at school, a staff member will call you to arrange for her/him to be picked up.

How can I contact my child’s teacher?

You may call the Office and leave a message there if classes are in session.  Messages on the answering machine will be checked several times a day and teachers will return phone calls as soon as possible.  Kindly do not call CCS staff at their homes.

How can I get a message to my child?

Urgent messages and emergency calls should be directed to the Office. No other messages will be delivered. Students are not allowed to use the Office phone unless under the direction of a teacher for school purposes.

What should students wear to school?

Students should wear appropriate clothing for a school environment.  We encourage jeans or comfortable pants as much of the school day is active.  Please keep in mind that unless weather is inclement, students will be spending their recesses and lunch periods outside, every day, therefore you should always make sure that they bring appropriate outerwear (sweater, sweatshirt, jacket or raincoat).  Younger children will need a complete change of clothes (kept at school in a small box, labeled with their name).  For P.E. classes, all students must wear appropriate shoes and shorts/pants (no “jellies”, sandals or party/platform shoes).

Are carpools available?

We encourage carpooling and suggest that you consult the CCS Phone List.

How can parents help in the classrooms?

There are many volunteer jobs available through the Parent Participation Program.  Contact you child’s teacher if you would like to make additional time contributions.

Are parents able to take part in day fieldtrips?

We could not run our fieldtrip program without parent participation.  All parents will be responsible for driving on at least two fieldtrips for the school year; and all fieldtrip dates are noted on the school calendar included in this Handbook.  Driving on fieldtrips will go towards fulfilling your PPP requirement.

Are siblings welcome on fieldtrips or overnights?

For liability and supervision reasons, we cannot allow siblings to join us on our fieldtrips.

How is school news disseminated?

Correspondence is sent home via e-mail on Wednesdays. Please make sure to check your e-mail on Wednesdays for these weekly school updates. Refer to school calendar, school newsletters, notice boards at the entrances of both the Lower and Upper Grades Campuses for updates and reminders.
